Assignment 6 – Typography

Photo #1:

I want to create an image like the one above where there is a vignette around a country (the USA) and it makes it seem like the US is isolated. I plan on using writing the letters the USA in a bold font in the ocean somewhere and make sure there is plenty of contrast. I plan on taking this photo next weekend.

Photo #2:

I want to take a picture of a steamy window because I believe that these types of images provide excellent mood.  I haven’t decided completely decided what to write but I want to add something that explains the subjects and makes as clear as possible. I want to take this photo either during sunset or sunrise so that the light can come through the window at a perfect angle.

How can the use of typography impact a digital photograph and its concept?

One can use typography to impact a digital photograph though drawing to attention just a certain attribute of a photo or explaining the portrait in some way. Adding type to an image also bringing in a creative element that viewers don’t typically see so it adds some intrigue.

Assignment 5- Color

I want to take this picture of a human hand with contrasting lighting so that the shadows and various crevices of the hand are visable, but not distracting. I plan on taking this photo sometime this week in the photo lab.

I also want to take a picture of the some of the street art on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix. It won’t be a snapshot like the one about rather a genuine picture that highlights the colors of the mural.

I want to take a photography that focuses on morning routines and habitual action. I plan on taking a picture of a very visually pleasing breakfast sandwich next to a cup of coffee or orange juice. I want the green of the avocado and the orange of the OJ to really pop out but not distracting.

I also want to take a picture with the obvious bokeh of grass very close up. It will work best if the grass is wet, so let’s hope it rains! I plan on using a very low aperture and getting very close to the grass to take this shot.

How can a photograph emphasize colors more than the subjects that create those colors?

The framing and positioning of a subject are extremely important when emphasizing color in a picture. If a photographer is trying to highlight the color of a certain object than it is important to set up your picture so that color is the first thing that the viewer sees.

Assignment 4 Portriats

Dominant Value

Dom Value Close Up

For my Dominant Value Portrait, I want to take a photo where the subject’s face fills most of the frame. I plan on having the subject looking past the lens to get the feeling that the picture was possibly candid. I will also make this black and white and make sure the model is wearing a neutral colored shirt. My model will probably be Jackson H. or Michael C.

Studio

Studio Port

For my designated studio portrait I want to make eye contact a priority. I plan on adjusting the aperture like the photo above did so only the face is in complete focus. My model will most likely be Bennett H. for this picture.

Full Body

I plan to take my full body portrait in a natural setting. Unlike the picture, top left I will have the feet of the model showing.  I will edit the pictures in the Samuel Elkins style. I will potentially have the model looking forward like in the second picture. My sister will be my model.

  • How can you add emotion/conceptual depth to a portrait?
    • Emotion is evoked in many different ways in a portrait. The body language and expression of the model will have a major impact as well as the clothes of the model and the work that is done in post.
  • What does the use of dominant value change about a portrait and the concept behind the image?
    • The mood of the picture is greatly impacted by the use of dominant value change. If the exact same picture is taken with deeper shadows and a darker dominant value the entire image tells a different story.
  • How can layered textured images change the concept of a portrait?
    • Textured images have the ability to tell a story about the model that might not me be apparent if there was no layered texture. Portraits exist to tell a story about the model in some way and layered textured image s add another dimension to that story.

Assignment 3 Portraits

Multiple Subjects

I will shoot my multiple subject portraits in the studio with two of my friends side my side. I will have an African- American friend next to a caucasian friend and they will be wearing shirts that are the opposite of the skin tone. Sebastien R. and either Karl Z. or Jaxson B. will be my models.

Textured

Processed with VSCOcam with a4 preset

I plan to take my textured portrait through the use of a projector. I like the use of photos with a high contrast to shine on the subjects. So while I might not use the exact design as above, I will use a photo with high contrast. My model will probably Ryan G. for this picture

Prop

mirror portriat

I like the idea of using a shard of a mirror as a prop. I plan on using the prop with demonstrate how we are all broken in own way. I might take this in the studio at school as well or just set up my own makeshift studio at home. My model will most likely be my sister.

I want to take this photo because I love the creativity of the organization. I plan on taking this photo on Saturday. I like the idea of having multiple fruits that are different shapes, so I plan on using similar fruits and the white dots from the bowl.

IMG_1476

I love the idea of having multiple subjects that are each slightly different, but visually similar. I like that is on a white background, giving a clear and clean look. I also plan on taking this photo this weekend. I will hopefully use limes, but possibly lemons.

I am also interested in knolling photography like the example above. I plan on using travel equipment as a subject just like the example. The most difficult part of the photograph I believe will be the fact that I am limited to natural light. Utilizing the natural light effectively will be a challenge.

The Question of the Week: How does the use of only natural light influence the composition and detail of a subject?

When there is only natural light, that typically means that there is only one point where the light is coming from (but not always like when mirrors or reflectors are involved), which can cause unwanted shadows. Also, natural light is very bright and is often times overwhelming in a photograph.

Shapes and Space

I plan on finding a light background inside where I can manipulate the lighting and use studio lights to cast the shadow of the lurking figure with either of the two hatchets above. I plan on taking this set of photos on Sunday.

For this picture, I plan on capturing the plane in front of a black background with studio lights to provide the dramatic effect that I desire. I will try to make it look as if it is an actual World War 1 plane that is caught out on a dark night. There are no photos that I could find that was of what I plan to do, so this was the closest I could find. I Plan to take this set of photos on Monday.

Cow Skull.jpg

I plan to try and replicate the photo above on Saturday. It will be difficult to replicate the sheer black so I will try to muster as close as I can. I will use a put small flashlights in the skull so that it illuminates and shows that rich orange from within.

fork shadow

I plan to also try and take the above photo on Sunday. It is relatively easy to set up unlike my other pictures, so I can to get as creative as I can with my placement and try a variety of set-ups. I will need one Antique fork and black construction paper for this photo.

Question of the week: How can you emphasize basic shapes and space to create a
visually appealing photograph?

I think that the most important part of emphasizing basic shapes and space to create an image is realizing that every part of a photo from saturation level to a leaf in the background will either hurt or help your image. When you take a staged image it is important to take every detail into account and make sure that every part of the photo impacts the emphasis and in turn the quality of the final product.
